Safety Guidelines for Organized Rides

Group Rides - Tips for having a great ride experience

Eight "group riding" guidelines for organized rides as shared by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine ...

  • Ride Smart - be alert, be aware, don't overlap wheels, keep your helmet on, level, and snug.
  • Be Predictable - look before you make a move, ride in a straight line, and if changing direction or speed, let people know.
  • Ride single file most of the time and never more than two abreast.
  • Choose Proper Lane Positioning - 2-4 ft from pavement edge, move left and take the lane when turning left, don't cross yellow lines, be courteous, make room for cars when it's safe to do so.
  • Communicate - call out "car back", "slowing/stopping", etc.; don't ride with ear buds!
  • Respect Traffic Signs & Signals - yellow means "slow down" not "sprint"; queue up at intersections in the line of traffic; don't filter forward along the right.
  • Pass On The Left - alert other riders to your presence (on your left)
  • Get Completely Off Pavement When You Stop - Don't block traffic.
